Free Beginner Motorcycle Drills (5-Drill Starter Pack)
These are 5 of my SMART Rider Drills that build the fundamentals most riders skip. You’ll practice slow-speed control the right way — with clickable QR links that take you straight to videos of me demonstrating each drill.
What You’ll Practice
This isn’t “tips.” It’s a short, structured practice plan so you actually get better. You’ll work the core skills that create confident riders:
- Slow-speed balance (stop wobbling, stop foot-dabbing)
- Clutch control (friction zone feel without stalling)
- Throttle control (smooth roll-on, no lurching)
- Braking control (clean, controlled stops without panic grabs)
- Turning control (U-turns and sharp turns with proper head/eyes)
Are there videos for these drills?
Yes. Inside the PDF you’ll have clickable QR links that take you to a video of me demonstrating each drill.
Is this based on the SMART Rider Drills booklet?
Yes. These 5 drills come from the SMART Rider Drills system (24 drills total), built for structured parking-lot training.
Do I need cones?
No. Cones help, but 5 tennis balls cut in half work great as low-profile markers.

Beginner Motorcycle Drills You Can Practice at Home
These beginner motorcycle drills are designed to help new and returning riders build real control before riding in traffic. Instead of guessing or “just riding around,” these drills give you a structured way to practice the skills that matter most at low speeds—where most riders struggle.
The drills focus on slow-speed balance, clutch control, throttle control, braking, and turning. You’ll practice U-turns, sharp turns, and controlled stops using simple parking-lot setups. Each drill is part of the SMART Rider training system and includes clear measurements and video demonstrations so you know exactly what correct technique looks like.
You don’t need special equipment or a closed course. Ten cones work best, but five tennis balls cut in half make excellent low-profile markers. Any empty parking lot can be used, as long as you practice responsibly and stay aware of your surroundings.
These motorcycle training drills are ideal for brand-new riders, riders returning after time off, or anyone preparing for a motorcycle skills test. By practicing slow-speed control the right way, you build confidence, reduce panic reactions, and develop habits that carry over to real-world riding.
Start with the free 5-drill starter pack, then move into the full 24-drill SMART Rider system if you want a complete, repeatable training progression you can use for years.
